If your body's pH is highly acidic most of the time, you can increase your risk for a variety of diseases. A pH balance of 0 to 6 is acid, a pH balance of 7 is neutral, and a pH balance of 8 to 14 is alkaline. If you have been eating a lot of acidic foods, you can adjust the balance by learning how to correct high acid pH with high alkali foods. Monitor your stress level If you made dietary changes and included less acidic foods in your diet and still notice a high acid pH balance, stress could be the culprit. Utilize stress reduction techniques to help reduce acidity. Change your diet Acidic foods may include meat (animal protein), dairy, white rice, wheat and white flour, including pasta. Amaranth, millet, and quinoa are good grains. All meats are acidic though beef, pork and shellfish are the worst. Soy milk is alkaline, green tea and tisanes are alkaline, but black tea and alcohol are acidic. Raw spinach is great, but cooked spinach not so much (though it’s not the worst). Check your medications as certain medications can cause your pH balance to be acidic If you are not sure, speak to your doctor. If the medication is necessary and you cannot avoid it, you may help combat the acidic pH by eating alkaline foods. Use a pH testing strip to test your pH balance. You can either test your urine or saliva. Test 60 minutes before eating a meal and 2 hours after eating. This will give you the best range of pH. Test twice a week. Monitor your alcohol consumption If you have problems with stomach acid, you may need to reduce or even stop drinking alcohol. The biggest culprits are beverages with a low ethanol concentration 5%, such as beer and wine. Fermented alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, champagne, sherry, etc.) are considered powerful stimulators of stomach acid production. No direct link has been discovered between alcohol and stomach ulcers, but people who have ulcers are also more likely to have cirrhosis of the liver, a condition often caused by heavy alcohol consumption. First off, let's unpack what pH is.... it stands for the potential of Hydrogen. It essentially measures the alkalinity or acidity in a solution. In this video, we're not going to discuss the blood pH as that's a narrow range that the body regulates at all costs. Instead, we're going to be discussing the urine and saliva pH. What I love about these tests is that it's something you can do in the comfort of your own home for a few pennies. While it's not a failsafe system, it does give you an indication of what's going on in your body. OK, now for the testing and ideal ranges... Urine pH: You want to test the SECOND pee of the day. Your first urine will be overly acidic as it dumps the wastes from the night before. When you're ready, simply tear off a small piece of litmus paper and put in urine stream for a few seconds. Or, you can pee into a small cup and dip the paper into your urine that way. Look at the color of your paper immediately and compare with the color chart on your litmus paper. You want to aim for a urine pH of 6.0-6.5. While many alkalizing diets and websites will claim you want 7.0-7.5, I don't think this is ideal based on science and my research. If you test later in the day and your urine is more like 6.5-7.0, that's fine as we tend to become more alkaline as the day goes on. First off, our kidneys are supposed to eliminate acids so we want our urine to be on the acidic job. If the urine is too alkaline, it can mean that the kidneys aren't working properly or there's something off metabolically. Be aware that certain supplements like vitamin D, calcium and magnesium can throw your numbers off a bit in some instances. If you want to know your "true" pH, go a few days without supplements and then re-test. Saliva pH: This measures the enzyme reserves in your body and the function of digestive organs like stomach, pancreas and liver. You want to test first thing in the morning before you brush your teeth or even take a drink of water. The ideal range is 6.5-7.0. This shows you have a nice reserve of minerals but also shows that you're digesting food well. If you're over 7.0, your digestive system may be a bit sluggish and you can have issues with gas, constipation, and fungus/mold. Tap water PH went from 7.26 to 8.32. (Alkaline) Bottle water PH went from 6.67 to 8.30 (Alkaline) Distilled water PH went from 6.76 to 8.37 (Alkaline) So by adding an alkaline bases solution sodium bicarbonate in this case, it pushed it up over 2 points in the bottle water and distilled water, but only 1 in the tap water. What this proves is baking soda does increase the PH level and make it more alkaline, it also shows that because of all the chemicals already in tap water the sodium bicarbonate did not make a huge difference. This shows that the key is to drink the purest water possible (distilled water) and then add if you wish something which can push up the PH level. Even with a PH of 6.67 for distilled water, it still is not that bad and may not need to add anything, distilled water is very close to being neutral anyhow. Some drinks which a lot of people consume each day are more corrosive than distilled water like Beer: pH 2.5 Coca-Cola: pH 2 Coffee: pH 4 And remember at least with Distilled water it is pure H20 with no nasties what so ever! Distilled water is natures' rain water (although it is now too polluted).

I use these digestive enzymes from Garden of Life RAW Enzymes for Women http://amzn.to/Z4Fpe3 Now that we know how to test our pHs and what the ideal ranges are for saliva and urine, let's talk about how we get back in balance. What to do if your urine is too acidic? First try adding in a lot of vegetables through vegetable soups (see my Mega Mineral Broth) and juicing. If that doesn't seem to move your numbers, then try adding more meat (yes, meat!) to your diet. That's because for some people meat is actually alkalizing and vegetables are acidifying! If that doesn't work, try adding 1/4 tsp. of baking soda to your water. Sodium Bicarbonate is one of the most alkalizing substances on the planet... and CHEAP! What to do if your urine is too alkaline? First, be sure your supplements aren't throwing off your numbers. High levels of vitamin D, cod liver oil or calcium/magnesium can artificially cause your urine to be alkaline. Go off all supplements for a few days and re-test. If it's still alkaline, then there's usually a digestion issue going on. First try reducing your consumption of grains and nuts/seeds, which can be hard to digest for some people. If that doesn't work, then try reducing your meat and increasing your vegetables. Then re-test. Keep experimenting with your diet and take out anything that might be causing digestion issues. Legumes are notorious for this as well. You also might want to add digestive enzymes or increase magnesium to be sure your bowels are working properly. What if your saliva is too acidic? This is usually digestion as well. Adding in digestive enzymes usually brings your pH back into balance. Next, try increasing your consumption of green drinks, vegetables and soups. These can help boost alkaline reserves. However, for some people, they actually need more meat. Yes, meat can increase their alkaline reserves. You also might want to reduce your grains and legumes as these can be acidifying for some people. If nothing is working, add in 1/4 tsp. of baking soda to water away from meals. This usually does the trick. What if your saliva is too alkaline? You want to speed up digestion so digestive enzymes work well. You could also be sure your bowels are working properly. Vitamin C can sometimes help move the saliva down to a healthy range. Adding in eggs and meat can also help some people become more acidic. Play with it and observe.
